How Freelance Workers Are Helping Companies Address Labor Shortage Crisis: New Survey – Forbes

The good news for the economy is that a majority of surveyed hiring managers said they plan to bring on more staff in the next six months. Unfortunately, most managers are having problems finding the right people to hire.

That’s according to the results of a new survey released today by Upwork, a marketplace forum for independent contractors.

Closing the Gap

Upwork’s Future Workforce Report found that 69% of hiring managers anticipated hiring more workers in the next six months. At the same, though, 60% cited difficulties finding quality talent to fill their open positions.

For many companies, tapping into the independent contractor workforce is way of addressing the ongoing labor shortage. Almost 80% of the managers who hire freelancers felt confident they could find the help they needed, versus 63% of the managers who do not work with independent contractors.

Urgent But Changing Needs

To help ensure their own success, independent contractors need to keep pace with the changing demands of the marketplace. As I wrote in January, “…the expertise and skills of many freelancers may not be what employers need or want. And even if they happen to be a good fit today, that may not be the case tomorrow.

“This could also be bad news for many business leaders who, as The Great Resignation continues, may find it more challenging to find the best independent contractors to fill vacant positions.”

According to Upwork, hiring managers are prioritizing filling several job categories in the next six months, including customer support (52%) and accounting (33%). IT and networking (30%), and operations (29%).

Side Benefit

There is another benefit for managers in hiring freelancers. “Organizations that work with independent talent are more confident about withstanding turmoil,” according to Upwork’s report…84% say they are confident in their company’s ability to respond to disruption, compared to 69%of those who do not use freelancers.”

‘Setting Themselves Up For Success’

“As the [survey] results show, businesses innovating their talent strategy to include variable, independent talent are setting themselves up for success,” Tony Buffum, vice president of HR client strategy at Upwork, said via email.

“They are building a dynamic workforce that can scale or contract as needed, whether due to seasonal demands, highly specialized projects, or market conditions. With seemingly more unpredictability than ever, businesses that want to survive and thrive should reevaluate their talent strategy to embrace flexible, on-demand talent,” he observed.

“The fact that businesses are hiring may surprise people, given the number of stories about layoffs and freezes. However, that is the type of labor market we are in now; companies are laying off, but others are still hiring, and the market for talent remains very tight,” Buffum said.

“With seemingly more unpredictability than ever, businesses that want to survive and thrive should reevaluate their talent strategy to embrace flexible, on-demand talent,” he concluded.

About The Survey

Upfront’s survey was conducted by independent research firm ClearlyRated. More than 1,000 U.S. hiring managers were surveyed through a third-party, independent online sample between April 25, 2022 through May 10, 2022. The margin of error of was ±3.06% at a 95% confidence level.
