Delaware State Police have arrested Santo Carela-Perez (no photograph available), 23, of Port Deposit, MD, for felony drug charges following a traffic stop in the Newark area on Tuesday morning.
On October 18, 2022, at approximately 10:13 a.m., a trooper working patrol in the area on Interstate-95 and the JFK Service Center observed a 2011 Nissan Sentra traveling southbound I-95 fail to maintain a lane and fail to properly use a turn signal. A traffic stop was initiated in the area of Route 896, and contact was made with the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Santo Carela-Perez. A computer inquiry revealed Perez did not have a valid license nor have proof of insurance in his possession. After further investigation, troopers discovered approximately 29.23 grams of crack cocaine in his possession.
Carela-Perez was taken into custody without incident and transported back to Troop 6 where he was charged with the following crimes:
- Possession With Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance in Tier 3 Quantity (Felony)
- Possession of a Controlled Substance in Tier 3 Quantity (Felony)
- Numerous Traffic Violations
Carela-Perez was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $40,300 cash bond.
